Subscription Trackers That Don't Need Your Bank Account

Most "best subscription tracker" lists lead with apps that connect to your bank and scan your transaction history to find recurring charges automatically. It's convenient, and for people with dozens of forgotten subscriptions, genuinely useful. But it's worth being clear-eyed about what you're handing over to get that convenience.

Your subscription list is a surprisingly detailed profile of your life — streaming taste, fitness habits, dating apps, financial tools, health services. A tool that reads your bank feed to build that list sees your entire spending history to get there, not just the subscriptions.

What bank-linked actually means

Apps like this typically use a service such as Plaid to get read-only access to your linked accounts, then run pattern detection across your transactions to guess which charges are recurring. It's read-only, so it can't move money — but "read-only" still means a third party is storing a copy of everything else on that statement too, not just the subscriptions it flags.

The manual alternative isn't a step backward

Manually adding a subscription — name, price, renewal date — takes maybe fifteen seconds per entry, and after the first setup pass, you're only touching it when something actually changes. In exchange, nothing about your finances ever leaves your device. There's no account to breach, no server storing your data, because there isn't a server involved at all.

The honest trade-off: manual tracking won't surface a subscription you've completely forgotten about and stopped seeing in your inbox. If that's your specific problem — genuinely losing track of what you're paying for — a bank-linked tool solves it faster. If you already roughly know what you're subscribed to and just want reminders before renewals, prices in one place, and a clear monthly total, manual entry costs you almost nothing.

Where Renuway fits

I built Renuway around the manual side of this trade-off on purpose. Everything you enter — product, price, renewal date, notes — saves to your browser's local storage. There's no account, no backend, no analytics. The only network call the app makes is a generic exchange-rate fetch for currency conversion, and that request carries no information about you or your subscriptions. You can export everything to a plain JSON file whenever you want, and that file is yours to keep.

Track renewals, prices, and free trials — no bank account, no sign-in, no server.
